Now almost famous building at the heart of the expropriate and demolish issues at the core of the government’s Turcot plan. Couple of articles in French discuss the building and it’s occupants here and here. I really like how Kate over at Montreal City Weblog summarized the situation, “…the kind of folks the city likes to pay lip-service to in discussions of creative capital, but moves aside easily when big projects come along.”
Indeed.
I have been lucky enough to visit the building on a number of occasions and have met a lot of the residents. There are many interesting people living in 780. Maybe it takes a special type to live so close to a freeway, the Turcot wilderness beckoning from beyond the ramps stretched out in it’s vastness, an alternate universe to the endless elevated hum of vehicles rushing to places elsewhere, anywhere but here, the sounds of industry and another time echoed by freight trains passing through and the energetic ding ding ding of the street barriers further down Saint Remi, but it is also a community.
I participated in a one day photography exhibition along the walls of the first floor corridor last June. It was pretty cool. And that might make me a little biased, but you won’t find more creativity living in one building, not in Pointe Saint Charles, not even in Griffintown! 780 Saint Remi is the western tip of the (Griffintown) Cultural Corridor which runs through the SudOuest burrough.
Here are some views from the roof.

Village des Tanneries. The street going towards downtown on the left is Cazelais, the left side of which was to be demolished under the original plan, though it now appears that most may be saved. Sadly, that construction tower is putting up an 8 story building that will just block this view.

Train going in to Dead Dog Tunnel. This was taken on a Saturday and those ramps were closed to traffic while some work was being done. There is always work being done at Turcot.

According to this page not a lot is known about the history of the building.
Two of my favorite pictures I have taken of 780.

Montreal needs to save this building for all kinds of good reasons. The MTQ wanting to build a dysfunctional freeway that will hurt the city is not a good reason to lose a treasure such as 780 Saint Remi! I urge everyone who reads this to go for a visit, take in the surroundings, and be amazed!

HAVE YOU SEEN ‘WOLFY” ? He’s a reddish brown pitbull (small for the breed, about 18 inches tall, 30 pounds). He has a few scars on its face, but is very friendly to humans and follows anyone) who lives at the 780… At least he did until Wolfy decided to help himself to a few of Lorraine’s delicious hamburgers (who could blame him, really)… In the commotion, Wolfy has run off and has been missing ever since. If you see him or hear of his whereabouts, please contact Alex alex@websites.ca or the CCVT villagedestanneries@gmail.com

Otherwise, The Fête des Voisins Solidaires was a success in spite of the rain: Big in China, Fire at Rivky and RUSTED, not to mention local star in the making Bryanna, all sang and played great music, in shall we say, less than ideal conditions. Chef Lorraine cooked up delicious euro dogs and hamburgers as well as a variety of sandwiches on french bread for a hungry crowd. Lorraine’s own lemon-poppy pound cake, Lilli’s colorful fruit brochettes, popcorn, and an assortment of hot and cold beverages rounded off the menu. Almost everything was donated by local merchants (see below for a detailed list of sponsors).

Special thanks to M. Fattal, Jeff Sederoff (ELPRO), to MNA Marguerite Blais, who funded the electric train used for the Jane’s Walk of the Village des Tanneries, to Florence and Sylvie of the CÉDA and to our borough council members and their staff.

Many volunteers contributed to the success of this day: Sunsar, Alex C., Rosa, Jonathan, Ken, André D, Iannick, Jimmy, Tobie, Leila, Aaron, Matt, Guy and the team from Katimavik! Extra Big Thanks to André, Alex D, Robert and Luis who went over and above the call of duty !

But there’s one more thing before it’s over… Many smaller prizes were won on Saturday but the Big Raffle was postponed due to the weather, so Hurry and Buy, Sell, Raise some $$ for local projects!

What are the odds?!
Your chances of winning the 6/49 are pretty slim, but the odds of winning one of the Village des Tanneries Raffle prizes are excellent! 200 tickets have been printed and only 25 have actually been sold so far (with only three more days to go)… YOU do the math! (The draw originally scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to poor weather. Winners will be announced on Thursday June 10th at 4:45pm at the South West borough offices situated at 815 Bel Air: the mayor Benoit Dorais is hosting a special gathering to announce the winners as well as other news pertaining to projects for the Village des Tanneries).

$5 buys you a chance at one of the following great prizes:

A Date with the Mayor: Supper for you and a guest at restaurant BITOQUE in the company of the South West mayor Benoit Dorais! Wine and $150 gift certificate provided.

A relaxing Indulgence: $100 gift certificate to SPA Atmosphere of the downtown Hotel Delta

Manicure AND Pedicure: $80 gift certificate to Pierre Mon Coiffeur in Westmount

For the Movie Buff: $50 gift certificate to Cineplex Odeon

For the Handyman: $25 gift card to Home Depot

Bonus prize: A selection of DVDs from award winning documentary film maker Daniel Cross (Eyesteel Films) and a t-shirt depicting the City and Gas Co. from http://www.grifintown.org

Yea, it rained, and then it rained, and it rained some more, but a good time was had by those that toughed it out. I really want to thank Jody Negley for having the incredible energy it took to organize everything, so thank you so much, Jody!! Lots of good people showed up, the kids got rides on the Tanneries’ “train”, the BBQ never stopped, and all was well.

Rain and wind were strong at times.

Local politicians made the rounds.

Film crew.

And the show went on! Big In China

“So a documentary filmmaker walks into a bar…” (sorry, Marco, can’t resist)

Here is Lorraine, who I swear was cooking non stop for 10 hours! Merci!!

More tireless volunteers.

Fire At Rivky

Rusted

And my blurry pictures show that there was an art show inside.

I look forward to next year’s edition!

(And don’t forget there is a party in front of 780 Saint Remi from 1pm to 11pm)

Join Alexander Carruthers, Rosa Orlandini and local area residents on a walk around the Village des Tanneries. Come see what we are fighting to protect!

The Village des Tanneries: Living in the Shadow of Turcot

Let us take you on a tour of the small St-Henri neighborhood that’s been caught up in the center of the Turcot controversy: Scarred by industry and highway construction throughout it’s history, is this community worth saving?

Squeezed in between the CN train tracks and the 720 highway, on the western edge of St-Henri, the Village des Tanneries is a resilient community that is once again under threat. An estimated 400 residents will be displaced under the current plan to rebuild the aging Turcot Interchange.

Why all the fuss?: Growing environmental and public health concerns have been linked to air pollution due to car emissions. Community and environmental groups as well as Montreal’s public health dept have been calling on the Ministry of Transportation to rethink their outdated vision of our transportation infrastructure. Now that all municipal parties have come together in favor of a scaled down, more sustainable reconstruction project, the stage is set for a showdown between the Quebec Government and the City and Citizens of the municipality of Montreal:

Join us and learn what’s at stake on Saturday June 5th and weigh in on the future of Montreal’s future Turcot Interchange!

The walk begins at 2 pm in front of Dépanneur Lee (intersection rues Desnoyers and Cazelais) and ends approximately 1:45 hours later at the 780 photo exhibit. An electric train will be on hand for anyone with limited mobility or small children who wish to attend.
This is a repeat of the Jane’s Walk held in early May. Come for the tour, but stay for the party! The fête des voisins solidaires will take place in the parking lot of the 780. Festivities include live music, BBQ, bazar and raffle. Come prepared for fun!

COMMUNIQUÉ

Montreal, May 25th 2009

People from the Village des Tanneries are trying to reclaim their lives in the year following a public consultation process designed to assess the environmental impacts of the planned Turcot reconstruction.

The Ministry of Transport’s plan caused a great deal of turmoil, stress and uncertainty for the estimated 400 residents who live on the western fringe of St-Henri, many of whom are still facing possible expropriation. Students, single parents and seniors joined the ranks of social activists, urban planning experts and public health officials to denounce the many health, environmental and social impacts of the Quebec Ministry of Transport’s proposal.

‘The experience of the past two years has been incredibly intense… In many ways rewarding, but truly exhausting’ admits Jody Negley, co-founder of the local citizens’ committee (CCVT) …’Many of our community projects and summertime activities fell to the wayside as we fought to save the neighborhood. We need to shift gears’.

To this end, the CCVT is hosting a community block party to which all Village des Tanneries residents and supporters are invited: The ‘Fête des Voisins Solidaires’ on Saturday June 5th (1pm to 10pm) is to take place in the front parking lot of the 780 rue St-Rémi, the one hundred unit loft building still under threat.

Negley and fellow organizer Lorraine Krupa, a chef by profession, agree that the community is overdue for a celebration: A roster of bands will perform live on stage; a bazaar, a BBQ as well as a group photo exhibit and film screening about Turcot will take place. Local businesses and merchants are contributing food and $700 in prizes. Lucky winners will win supper with the borough mayor Benoit Dorais at restaurant Bitoque, luxury spa treatments, gift certificates as well as hourly door prizes. Proceeds of the two hundred raffle tickets to be sold will help finance 2010 summer projects in the Village des Tanneries.

Discover why this ordinary looking neighborhood, in the shadow of the Turcot Interchange, has been the subject of much controversy in 2009. Scarred by industry and highway construction throughout it’s history, is this community worth saving?
Squeezed between the CN train tracks and the 720 highway on the western edge of St-Henri, the Village des Tanneries is a resilient community that is once again under threat.
An estimated 400 residents will be displaced under the current plan to rebuild the aging Turcot Interchange. Environmental and housing groups as well as a large community of enlightened Montrealers have mobilized in opposition to the plan that would see an increase in car emissions and no firm plan for mass transit alternatives.
The walk begins at Sunday 2pm in front of Dépanneur Lee (intersection rues Desnoyers and Cazelais) and ends approximately 2 hours later in the Bikers’ Garden where refreshments will be served.

“Tannery Village is located in Saint-Henri, Montreal. This little community is fighting a government plan to rebuild the Turcot interchange, a series of elevated highways that run through the area. A local citizens committee is educating residents about the environmental and health impact faced by everyone living nearby.” Adam Bemma.
