One Island, One City, One Huge &#(*&@^ Mistake
Posted in Stupid, Urban, tagged Merger, Montreal on December 3, 2008 | 3 Comments »
The merger of all the municipalities on Montreal Island into one mega city was never a good idea in the first place. The old Montreal Urban Community, though flawed, accomplished everything the city can do today, and was more efficient at doing so. By all accounts it was been a distinct and an across the board failure.
Henry Aubin wrote yesterday about how Pauline Marois, one of the enthusiastic proponenets of the merger, now admits that while the merger was a bad idea, as leader of Quebec she would do nothing to change that. That is a truly scary.
Perhaps the most interesting thing in the article is that there appears to be no one who can come up with just one positive example of why the merger might have been a good idea. At 7 years this concept is well past any give-it-a-chance stage. It didn’t work. Simple. But given the attitudes of our provincial political leaders, it looks like Montreal will continue to be punished for this enourmous error in judgement on the part of provincial politicians.
We deserve better.
Water In Canada

Most Canadians probably figure we will easily survive global warming because, for one, we have an unlimited supply of water. Wrong! The Gazette has been running a series on Water in Canada this week and here is an exceprt from William Marsden’s new book, Stupid To The Last Drop: How Alberta Is Bringing Environmental Armaggedon To Canada (And Doesn’t Seem To Care). It’s an eye opener and yet more strong evidence that your grandchildren will have a not great shot at survival.

500,000 Books Buried On South Shore

That’s right, folks, Five Hundred Thousand Books! And 30,000 CD’s. It is a frightening story of a bureaucratic chain of command somehow totally losing track of the whole concept of “recycling” let alone the value of said items.
