Curtain to rise on $6-million Empress Theatre revival

Would include film, live shows and more

MONTREAL – The Empress Theatre would be reborn as a venue for Montreal’s vibrant music scene, an institute for analog film heritage and a gathering place where Montrealers can drink, dine and enjoy a breathtaking view from a green rooftop terrace, under a proposal from a Notre Dame de Grâce community organization.

“We’re pretty excited about the proposal,” said Jason Hughes, treasurer and board member of the Empress Cultural Centre.

On Wednesday evening, the centre will unveil a $6-million plan to revive the theatre at 5560 Sherbrooke St. W. as a self-financing cultural complex.

The group is submitting the scheme to the Côte des Neiges-Notre Dame de Grâce borough, which has called for proposals for redeveloping the heritage theatre facing Girouard Park.

Several unnamed investors are behind the proposed redevelopment, which must be self-financing under rules set by the borough, Hughes said.

The proposal reflects broad input from local residents, he said.

“It’s been interesting to hear people’s hopes for that place, and to say, yeah, we should have that kind of live performance space, that we can support that kind of thing,” Hughes said. (more…)

One can sort of hear some nyah nyah going on in the background with NDG’s poorest district going up against wealthy Westmount.

Tensions grow as Glen Access Road remains closed.

Fire In NDG

Came upon this around 3 on Friday afternoon, corner of Prudhomme and Sherbrooke. These buildings have been empty for 10 years from what I heard on the street. Apparently bought by an American who did not go ahead with renewal plans because of recession…

The fire was in the apartment building in the back.

Lots of firepersons on that roof.

Seems like so long ago there was actually tv “repairmen” in this world. Anyone else remember bringing your tubes in to get tested? Those machines were so “space age” cool, heh heh, used to have one in Woolworth’s.

Flames getting intense in that room.

Turned on the hoses and it was out in no time.

This all led into Friday rush hour and the ramp up from Decarie was closed.

On the way back about 2 hours later the streets were open but there was still checking it out and cleaning it up going on.

Movies In The Park!

Friday night there was a presentation of 20 short locally produced films shown in NDG Park. The event was put together by various groups trying to help save the Empress Theatre (Cinema V to some of you). There was 500 people who showed up and it was a fantastic showcase of local film talent. We need to have events like this in the city much more often, local art by local folks. It was a wonderful evening.

Save The Empress and do not let Michael Applebaum destroy arts and culture, sports and recreation in NDG!
