What A Run!

On Saturday around 3:30 pm I was standing under a small overhanging roof in front of an apartment building on Lasalle Boulevard in Verdun. My jeans were soaked from the knees down and water was draining off my cap and jacket and I was worried that the flyers I had in my backback would start getting wet soon too. I was looking up rue Troy and trying to remember if the front doors to some apartment buildings would open into the lobby if I took a quick run there. I really wanted to get this last door to door thing done! But it was pouring and a part of me felt like maybe this whole campaign thing was just a crazy dream. I mean, like you are the Turcot Yards guy, maybe this is as good as it gets, just an eccentric getting what you asked for. People buying beer at the depanneur across the street would see me and look like they were thinking how the poor dumb flyer delivery guy actually has to do crap like that. They really don’t want to be you now. Nope.
To follow your heart sometimes requires digging inside for a little more. If you believe in your passions, regardless of what conventional wisdom may say, you might need to get out of your comfort zones. So I ran to the apartment buildings, which were open, folded the flyers into the mailboxes, no time to talk now, got organized, and did all of Troy, which is a short street, but long enough in a downpour when you are drenched and exhausted.

I am a passionate believer in the Projet Montreal program and a huge fan of Richard Bergeron. He is a man I admire and respect. The media made a big deal about his apparent beliefs about 9/11 and smoking, but this only made him more real, more believable, to me. I don’t trust politicians who hide under the old “normal” banner. The world needs more Richard Bergerons, passionate, creative people, who sincerely care about the city and it’s people. People who are not ashamed to bang a different drum, or let you bring your own.

I am very, very proud of the entire Projet Montreal team, their friends, volunteers, and supporters. These are great people who are going to do wonderful things for Montreal. The future of the city is in very good hands, indeed! But there is still a lot of work to do to ensure the possibilities. We need to be even more vigilant with the Tremblay regime.

It was an impressive run! Going from 8% to 25% when up against a money machine and and a very cynical population is an astonishing achievement. If we had Tremblay’s campaign budget and a higher voter turnout, we may have won big time.

On a personal note my French has improved significantly and am working up the guts to predict bilingualism for 2013. Okay, I will shoot for 2011. I am a work in progress. :P

I am very grateful to the people in Verdun who voted for Projet Montreal. I thank you for seeing the program as not just worthy but necessary, and for stepping outside the box. Verdun has been subject to the same old regime for far much too long. So we will be back in 2013!
Thanks!

***VOTE TODAY ONLY FROM 10AM to 8PM***

Dear friends,

In the last municipal election of 2005 one Projet Montréal candidate
lost by 9 votes. Yes, you read it right, 9 votes!!! In the days
following, this candidate came across many people in the district who
said they were going to vote for her, but, for many banal reasons,
finally did not.

Every vote counts. And this year even more so, given the tight race
we’re expecting.

So between 10AM and 8PM today we strongly urge you to do whatever it
takes to get out and vote.

We’re counting on you.

To find out where you must vote, follow this link:

Let’s do it on Sunday, Montreal!!!

The 2009 campaign is almost over, and we are now closer than ever to
achieving our goal: according to the latest poll, Richard Bergeron,
after gaining as many as 20 points in the last two months, is now at
32%, while Harel and Tremblay are at 34% and 30% respectively. But we
can’t rest on our laurels, and we need your help for the last big push
before the polling stations close on Sunday.

Latest poll from La Presse shows the race going in to the final weekend as
Harel 34%
Bergeron 32%

The current election should make one thing quite clear – Montreal needs sweeping changes at City Hall! There really is not much of an argument left for Gerald Tremblay and his Union party. Not only are they besieged by scandal but one gets the very strong feeling that we are only on the edge of things, that surely there is much more to come, with implications that could rock the whole province.

And they have been horrible administrators as well. The city agreed to a 20 year lease for offices in buildings valued at 100 million dollars. And they are paying 300 million dollars to rent! And they sold Gare Viger for 9 million dollars when it had a market value of 60 million dollars. Who actually benefits from this? Not the taxpayers who will inevitably be asked, once again, to pay for all these apparent gaffes. Why vote for Temblay now when his resignation may be coming soon? That would surely be a mess.

Louise Harel and Vision have not demonstrated that they have paced any distance between themselves and Pierre Bourque, the founder of Vision. Harel was one of the masterminds of the “Mega City” mergers for Montreal which have been universally acclaimed as a failure. She currently likes to talk about realigning the boroughs and their structures because even she knows a bloated largely ineffective bureaucracy when she sees one, even if it is primarily because of her design. Voting for Louise Harel is like going to church, seeing the person who burned down your house is the minister, and saying “Amen” and simply carrying on as if nothing ever happened. Takes a lot of blind faith!

Louise O’Sullivan, founder of the poorly named, Équipe Louise O’ Sullivan Parti Montreal Ville-Marie, was formerly a member of Gerald Tremblay’s party. She says she is “pro car” and I recently saw her on the news saying something like, “I can’t see myself biking to work”. Heck, biking to work should be a prerequisite for anyone hoping to be mayor of Montreal! Don’t look for relevance here.

So that leaves us with Richard Bergeron and Projet Montreal. Media types have been doing an Obama- like digging into Bergeron’s past to dig up as much tabloidish details as possible. Sadly, some people are buying it.
I first met Richard Bergeron in May of 2008 at the Centre Gadbois in Saint Henri where various community groups had organized an information session regarding the Turcot Interchange plan and how it would affect their communities. I was very impressed by his ability to connect with these groups, to understand the issues that were coming forward. Since then I have seen him at most gatherings concerning Turcot and consider him to be one of the key people in the movement for a better Turcot Project (along with way too many wonderful people to list here).
Richard Bergeron was talking about building a great sustainable Montreal well before the other candidates began to throw like terms around their programs. He is a good, honest, and sincere man who truly wants to bring Montreal into the 21st century.

Projet Montreal has the strongest platform of the parties in the race that covers all aspects of living in Montreal. They have a strong commitment to an open democracy at City Hall which this city desperately needs. The candidates represent an astonishing diversity of talents, all determined to work hard at making Montreal a world class center of sustainability, innovation, and economic development.

It is a time for courage and a time for change. On November 1st vote for Richard Bergeron and Projet Montreal!

Calling All Anglos!

Another city election is upon us and with it comes the usual campaign rituals; name calling, lip service, vague promises, and a smorgasbord of useless facts, and that is just from the incumbent. And no matter what they all say you know for sure you are going to get your brass polished for a few minutes before they go back to ignoring you for four more years. It’s an endless cycle of things not getting done, rising costs, ineffective bureaucracy (and the merged city made that much worse), more broken promises, and a general decline in the quality of services (you should see bus stops in Verdun in winter).
Our current mayor, Gerald Tremblay, campaigns amid a sea of controversy surrounding corruption charges, selling very, very valuable city property at bargain basement prices, while trying to convince us that highly unpopular billion dollar projects, like that at Griffintown, are good for the city. There is no logical reason to vote for Tremblay, unless you are one of the businesses that contributes to his campaigns of which apparently 94% will receive city contracts. There isn’t much integrity or personal pride in any of it.
So what do we do?
Louise Harel of Vision Montreal certainly deserves a chutzpah award for having the sheer gall to run. She was one of the architects of the universally acknowledged failed mega city and 8 years later we can clearly see that she has no true fundamental insight into how Montreal should be run most efficiently. But you probably don’t like her anyway as you simply could not support anyone for mayor of Montreal who was a Minister in a Parti Quebecois government. You don’t like what you feel is an obvious political agenda.
Fair enough.
But voting for Tremblay would just be really dumb.
I can guarantee you one thing and that is that the strategy of voting for the person who is not a “seperatist” is going to continue to backfire in perpetuity. There will be little comfort knowing Harel did not win if you are going to allow Gerald Tremblay and his developer buddies to just continue to sell low, build high, and do it all on your dime!

Let’s move in to the 21st century.
There is an alternative, a very real third party called Projet Montreal. Projet Montreal – go ahead, call it Project Montreal, it’s okay – is not an out of left field party, only popular with certain groups, and gone in a few years. It is, in fact, a rapidly growing movement of people from all walks of life determined to build a great sustainable city that is economically and socially responsible, with a strong commitment to the environment, while giving a voice to all it’s boroughs, neighborhoods, and citizens. Projet Montreal is the party for people who are fed up with the lies and tunnel vision ideas of traditional politicians who are quickly becoming irrelevant.
The leader of Projet Montreal, Richard Bergeron, has a PHD in Urban Planning. He thoroughly understands the issues facing the city in transportation, economic and sustainable development, and city administration. He is a good man who has shown much passion for the concerns of everyday ordinary citizens.
Just last week Richard Bergeron stated that the city needs to be studying an extension of the Metro Blue Line west of Snowdon to Montreal West (and you can see the three stations on Projet Montreal maps). Some might think it’s only another campaign promise. Well, sure, the timing is there, but this idea has become part of Projet’s Montreal transportation plans. He brought it up because the others have ignored it. And he understands the frustration of residents in the west end, and the West Island, who have to endure seeing places like Laval and Longueuil being offered the transportation carrots while they continue to get ignored. Projet Montreal understands that there is life west of Decarie!

Projet Montreal celebrates Montreal’s ethnic and cultural diversity. And it likes Montreal’s English community. It respects who you are, what you bring to the city, and hopes you want to participate. As an “Anglo” candidate I have been treated with much respect and warmth by candidates and supporters alike and really hope you will all at least give this party a look. You might like what you see!
The world is and has always been changing, but we are the brave pioneers of the Climate Change era. What we choose to do today will determine how well we may be able to live tomorrow. And we owe it to our children, our grandchildren, and future generations to be strong and just caretakers of this wonderful city. You have choices and you can have a voice if you give your support to a party that would like to listen.

Vote Projet Montreal!

And I urge all of you to do so not just because I am running in Verdun (Champlain-L’Ile-des-Soeurs – Ken McLaughlin), but because it is the only rational option out there.
The Tremblay administration has more than it’s fair share of corruption issues and is only capable of vague promises concerning the extremely important transportation future of Montreal. Time to go.
Louise Harel has incredibly nerve to run for Mayor as her megacity plans have failed miserably. She simply has not demonstrated any real understanding of the urban milieu in Montreal. Would be a big mistake.
Louise O’Sullivan is a federal Conservative (Reform in reality) who would like to bathe the city in a cloud of nostalgia. Not relevant.
That leaves us with only Richard Bergeron (who actually has a PHD in Urban Planning) of Projet Montreal. It is interesting times in the city and this is the only party committed to an open approach at city hall that places personal integrity and a commitment to community values at the top of the list.
The time for change is here, so get with it, Montreal!
